The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
