Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
