The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
