The White House confirmed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
